The Ogun State Police Command has paid N37.9m in insurance benefits to families and next-of-kin of police officers who died while serving under the command.

The cheques, totalling N37,913,081.77, were presented at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, under the Nigeria Police Force Group Life Assurance Scheme.

The scheme is designed to provide financial assistance to families of police officers who lose their lives in the course of service.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Oliver Ezirim, said the payment was made on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the IGP’s commitment to the welfare of police personnel and their families, saying the financial support was part of the Force’s responsibility to those left behind by officers who died in service.

He said, “While no financial assistance can replace the lives lost, this intervention reflects the Force’s appreciation of their sacrifices and its responsibility towards the families left behind.”

The presentation began with a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased officers.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs John Shito thanked the Inspector-General and the Ogun Command for the support, promising that the funds would be used judiciously for the welfare and sustenance of the affected families.

The command said the intervention reaffirmed that families of deceased officers remained part of the police family.
