A total of 135 newly commissioned Nigerian Navy officers have been charged to maintain high standards of discipline, professional competence and operational readiness as they begin their careers amid increasingly complex security challenges.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, gave the charge on Saturday during the Combined Passing Out Parade, Pipping and Commissioning Ceremony at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Afaka, Kaduna.
The ceremony was attended by President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, alongside other dignitaries.
Abbas said the officers’ commissioning marked the beginning rather than the end of their training, with their new responsibilities requiring leadership, discipline, loyalty and professional integrity.
He urged them to remain physically fit, professionally competent and operationally ready to contribute to the Navy’s responsibilities across the maritime domain and ongoing joint operations.
The Naval chief said the officers’ oath of allegiance should guide their conduct and service to the nation, while warning them against misconduct and other acts capable of damaging their integrity or cutting short their careers.
He said the increasingly complex security environment required officers who could adapt quickly and respond effectively to emerging threats.
Abbas also urged the officers to uphold the traditions and values of the Nigerian Navy and maintain discipline and professionalism throughout their careers.
The commissioning was part of the combined passing out ceremony for cadets of the 73 Regular Course, Short Service Course 49 of the Nigerian Army, Direct Short Service Course 34 and Branch Commission Course 3 of the Nigerian Air Force.
