A Non-Governmental Organization Fishnet Alliance has urged African governments to encourage fishing as a veritable source of livelihood.

The group which includes members from different African countries made the call at a meeting in Okrika waterfront Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

The Nigerian coordinator of the group and his counterpart from Togo said the meeting is to raise awareness about destruction in the fishing industry.

Some fishermen also explained the challenges faced on the waterways whenever they engage in their fishing Business.

The group, however, resolved that there should be increased participation in public policies by fishermen with regards to the marine environment.
