Firefighters in Oyo State have prevented a possible explosion after a 14,000-litre tanker carrying Automotive Gas Oil caught fire along Eleyele Road, Ibadan.
The incident occurred opposite the Nursing School, Eleyele, at about 6:37 pm after the state fire service received a distress call.
The Mercedes-Benz tanker, with registration number EKY 531 YK, was reportedly empty when the fire started.
Firefighters led by an officer identified as Adigun quickly responded and applied water to the tanker, containing the blaze before it could escalate.
The fire was eventually extinguished without any casualties.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency said preliminary findings indicated that sparks from the engine compartment caused the fire.
The operation was supported by personnel of the Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force and Federal Road Safety Corps.
The state fire service chairman and Special Adviser on Fire Reform, Dr Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged motorists and residents to maintain their vehicles regularly and observe safety regulations to prevent fire outbreaks and road accidents.
He also advised owners of public and commercial premises to install fire extinguishers and urged residents to provide accurate locations when reporting emergencies to enable responders to act quickly.
The firefighting team returned to its station at about 8:19 pm and remained on standby.
