Police in Cross River State have arrested a man, Ebino Mbang Ikpi, over the alleged stabbing death of his friend following a disagreement over the sharing of ₦500.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Kekoti, Ajere, in Yakurr Local Government Area of the state.
The victim, identified as 42-year-old Ayei Ekpe Ibor, was reportedly stabbed during a fight that followed the disagreement.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the victim was confirmed dead after the incident, while the suspect fled the scene.
According to the police, operatives launched a search for Ikpi and arrested him at about 8:40am in his hideout in the Ajere-Ekori area.
The suspect was taken to the Yakurr Divisional Police Station for detention and further investigation.
However, shortly after his arrest, some sympathisers and other persons allegedly attacked the Ekori Police Division, demanding his release.
The police said the group, after discovering that Ikpi was not at the station, threw stones at the facility, damaging seven windows, the DPO/DCO office door, six plastic chairs, a wall mirror, part of the roof and the passenger-side glass of the DPO’s official vehicle.
The residence of the Ajere Youth Leader, Omini Jacob, was also allegedly attacked over claims that he assisted the police.
Police operatives subsequently dispersed the mob and restored order at the station.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has ordered the suspect’s transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
He also directed the police to identify and arrest those allegedly involved in the attack and destruction of police and private property.
