The Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, has called for stronger collaboration with traditional rulers, community leaders and youths to tackle crime and sustain peace in Obi and Oju Local Government Areas of the state.
Nwadiogbu made the call during a strategic visit to the two local government areas as part of efforts to reduce crime and other violent criminal activities in the communities.
The commissioner urged traditional institutions, stakeholders and community youths to support the police with useful information and help ensure that criminal elements operating in their communities were brought to justice.
He also appealed to community members to assist police officers deployed to the areas, particularly by helping them navigate difficult terrains during operations aimed at flushing out criminals.
The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the police and communities and securing wider support for ongoing efforts to combat criminality in Obi and Oju.
The traditional rulers in the two local government areas expressed delight over the commissioner’s visit and pledged their support to the police.
They also commended Nwadiogbu for the relative peace recorded in the areas since he assumed office.
The police commissioner also visited the secretariats of the two local government councils, where he sought greater cooperation from the council chairmen, whom he described as the chief security officers of their respective localities.
The chairman of Obi Local Government Area raised concerns over kidnapping and armed robbery along the Obi-Otukpo road, saying some of the crimes were allegedly carried out with the assistance of indigenes.
He promised that the council would continue to work with the police and other security agencies to identify and apprehend criminals operating in the area.
Meanwhile, Nwadiogbu, accompanied by area commanders and other tactical teams, visited various divisional police headquarters in the two local government areas to assess their current operational state.
The assessment was part of efforts to strengthen policing and improve the response to criminal activities in the communities.
