Barrister Aloy Ejimakor has slammed the Federal Government for failing to acknowledge the appeal filed by his client, Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu, who leads the Indigenous People of Biafra, is currently serving a life sentence after he was convicted of terrorism.
According to Ejimakor, Kanu has fulfilled all legal requirements of his appeal by filing his brief of argument, motion for accelerated hearing, and a bail application before the Court of Appeal.
"Yet, the government has so far failed to file its reply brief, and the court is yet to schedule a date to hear either the substantive appeal or the bail application.
"This systematic delay is tantamount to injustice. Personal liberty is a fundamental right. When the main appeal is intentionally stalled by the prosecution's inaction, the bail application must be treated as high-priority," he said.
Ejimakor said keeping Kanu incarcerated without hearing his bail application amounts to a violation of his right to be heard within a reasonable time.
"The Court of Appeal is therefore strongly urged to act now! Hearing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s bail application has now become more urgent than ever," he said.
