The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission and the Southwest Governors’ Forum have honoured the late Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, describing him as a courageous leader and a symbol of justice, equity and selfless service.
The tributes were made on Tuesday at a press conference heralding a colloquium organised to mark Akeredolu’s 70th posthumous birthday at Cocoa House, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The colloquium has the theme, ‘Fundamentals and Governance of State Policing: Towards a New Architecture for National Security in Nigeria’.
The Director-General of the DAWN Commission, Dr Seye Oyeleye, said Akeredolu was a courageous leader who consistently placed the safety and wellbeing of his people first.
Oyeleye said the late governor lived a life dedicated to selfless service to humanity, both as a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association and as governor of Ondo State.
He said Akeredolu’s contributions to justice, governance and the wellbeing of the people remained significant to the development of the Southwest.
The Secretary-General of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, Miss Naomi Olabode, said Akeredolu might no longer be alive, but his ideals and impact continued to speak volumes and would not be forgotten.
Olabode said the former governor’s contributions had left an enduring mark on the region and the country.
Representing the Akeredolu family, Barrister Taiwo Adewole described the late governor as a true family man, an activist and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who contributed to the pursuit of justice.
The event brought together representatives of the DAWN Commission, the Southwest Governors’ Forum and the Akeredolu family to commemorate the former governor’s life and legacy.
The colloquium is expected to focus on state policing and its place in developing a new security architecture for Nigeria, while also reflecting on Akeredolu’s contributions to governance, justice and regional development.
