Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, was found dead in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Monday, October 5.
The Edo State Police Command said the hotel owner, manager and a 21-year-old woman who had been in the room with the lecturer before his death were arrested for questioning.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said police received a report about the incident at about 8pm on Monday.
According to her, the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Ikoedem said the woman later left the room after the lecturer asked her to get water, but returned to find him lying lifeless.
“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” she said.
The police spokesperson said the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death remained unclear, adding that the arrests were made to establish what happened before he died.
“The arrests were part of efforts to establish what transpired before his death,” Ikoedem said.
She added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary while the investigation continued.
Meanwhile, the university management said the incident had no connection with the institution’s official activities.
The university spokesperson, Otunba Aladenika, confirmed Uwuigbe as a member of staff but said the incident occurred outside the university environment.
He also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university, describing the incident as a private matter concerning the deceased.
