In December 1976, 24-year-old Patricia Adewuyi reportedly met identical twins Kehinde and Taiwo Ogundipe at a palm-wine bar in Lagos.

It was there that Patricia met Kehinde. As their relationship progressed, she accepted his marriage proposal. But there was something usual she would have to agree with: Kehinde had an identical twin brother, Taiwo, who also wanted to be part of the marriage.

For Patricia, the situation was an unprecedented proposition. She was not simply preparing to marry a man who happened to have a twin, she was to become their wife.

The arrangement was far from conventional, particularly in a society where the idea of one woman sharing her marital life with two men was likely to attract considerable curiosity.

Yet, according to later reports, Patricia eventually accepted the arrangement. Her mother, who was British-born, reportedly gave her blessing to the marriage.

The relationship also had a history before Patricia entered the picture. Reports indicate that the brothers had previously been involved with a woman named Rosaline from Benin City, but that relationship ended when she left them.

A boy named Noah was identified as Patricia's son, revealing that this was not merely an unusual romantic arrangement, but a family life involving a child.

The brothers' reported explanation for their relationship centred on their belief that they were meant to be together in everything they did. Their perspective offered a glimpse into how they understood their bond, although it does not tell us everything about the private realities of their household.

The story of the Ogundipe twins was not the only reported instance of identical brothers sharing a wife in Nigeria.

In Kogi State, twin brothers Taiwo and Kehinde Obadero, popularly known as Towo and Koido, reportedly shared a wife identified as Toyin. The brothers, who called each other “Oba,” had two children with her.

According to the report, their close bond dated back to childhood, following the death of their mother when they were about four years old. Their father reportedly wanted them to marry separate women. This demand caused tension within the family. The brothers eventually died under circumstances described as mysterious in the account.

Although the circumstances surrounding the two families differed, both stories drew attention to an unusual arrangement in which identical twin brothers shared a marital partner. Such cases remain uncommon in accounts of Nigerian family life, making the stories of the Ogundipe and Obadero twins particularly striking.
