Vice-President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated a teaching hospital and two schools in Maiduguri, Borno State, as the government steps up investment in healthcare and education to support recovery from years of insurgency.
The Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) is expected to provide specialised medical services within the state, reducing the need for patients to travel elsewhere for treatment.
Speaking at the inauguration on Friday, Shettima said the facility would bring expert healthcare closer to residents and ease the financial and emotional burden on families seeking treatment outside Borno.
He added that the hospital would also support medical research and train healthcare professionals, strengthening services in the state and across the North-East.
Shettima said the two schools inaugurated alongside the hospital would widen access to education, particularly for children whose lives had been disrupted by insecurity and displacement.
He commended Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for investing in the projects, saying healthcare and education were essential to rebuilding communities affected by the insurgency.
Earlier, Zulum described the hospital as a major step towards improving access to modern healthcare for residents of Borno and other parts of the North-East.
He said KIUTH would serve as a clinical training centre for the College of Health Sciences at Kashim Ibrahim University, providing practical training for medical students and other health professionals.
The governor said the institution would train doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists and other healthcare workers.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to invest in staffing, equipment and infrastructure to ensure the hospital delivered quality services.
Zulum also called on local and international partners to support the institution with medical equipment, technical expertise, exchange programmes and capacity-building initiatives.
He urged the hospital’s management to maintain transparency, discipline and accountability.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Kashim Ibrahim University, Mohamed Indimi, described the inauguration as a milestone for healthcare delivery in the region.
Indimi expressed confidence that the hospital would improve access to medical services and urged its management to uphold professionalism, compassion and high standards of care.
