NAFDAC says it uncovered a suspected counterfeit drinks facility in Lagos, where two suspects were arrested over alleged revalidation of popular beverages.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it uncovered a suspected counterfeit production facility at the BBA Trade Fair Complex in Lagos State, and arrested two suspects at the scene.

In a post on its official X account, NAFDAC stated that the operation took place at Zamfara Plaza within the complex.

According to the agency, the suspects were allegedly revalidating energy drinks and popular wine and whisky brands when officials discovered the operation.

The agency did not immediately disclose the suspects' identities or the specific beverage brands involved.

The development raises concerns about the authenticity of drinks sold to consumers, particularly where products may be made to appear genuine despite questions about their origin or quality.

Counterfeit beverages can pose risks to consumers when their ingredients, production conditions and safety standards cannot be verified. However, the safety status of any specific product would need to be established through the appropriate investigation and testing.

NAFDAC said further details would follow, leaving questions unanswered about the scale of the operation, the products recovered, and the next steps in the investigation.

The agency is responsible for regulating food, drugs and other products under its mandate, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, to help ensure that products available to the public meet applicable safety and quality standards.

Consumers are advised to remain cautious about beverages with suspicious packaging, altered expiry dates or questionable seals, and to report suspected counterfeit products to the relevant authorities.
