No fewer than 56 people have died in India's Uttar Pradesh state after exceptionally heavy rain triggered floods and landslides over three days, according to the government disaster agency.
More than 1,000 houses were damaged after a depression over the Bay of Bengal moved inland and intensified rainfall across the region, the Relief Commissioner's office said on Sunday.
The northern state recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain between Friday and Sunday, far above its seasonal average of 7.6mm.
The latest deaths occurred during a spell of exceptionally heavy rain that affected large parts of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, with more than 240 million residents.
Uttar Pradesh is frequently affected by heavy rain and thunderstorms during India's annual monsoon season, which runs from June to September.
India's weather office has warned in recent years of an increase in extreme weather events, including intense thunderstorms and lightning.
Experts have linked the rising frequency and intensity of such events to higher temperatures and changing climate patterns.
