Germany has introduced an online application route for selected long-stay visas, allowing eligible applicants to complete forms and upload supporting documents before scheduling appointments with its diplomatic missions.

The German Embassy announced the process in a post on its X account on Wednesday, directing applicants to the Consular Services Portal at https://digitaldiplo.de/visa .

The portal covers selected national visas for people intending to stay in Germany for more than 90 days. Eligible categories include student visas, EU Blue Cards, vocational training visas and family reunification visas.

Applicants are required to visit the portal, select their country of application, choose the relevant German embassy or consulate and identify the appropriate visa category before completing the online form.

They must then upload the required supporting documents and submit their applications for review by consular authorities.

Applicants are advised to monitor feedback after submission, as officials may request corrections or additional documents before proceeding with the application.

Once the application is ready for the next stage, applicants should follow the instructions provided by the relevant German mission to book an appointment.

However, the online service does not cover all German visa categories, and prospective applicants must confirm that their intended visa type is eligible before starting the process.

Those planning visits of 90 days or less for holidays, family visits or short business trips must use the applicable Schengen visa procedure instead.

The long-stay application portal is separate from the process for short-term visits, and applicants are advised to check the requirements published by the relevant German embassy or consulate.

Providing the correct information, selecting the appropriate visa category and submitting all required documents can help applicants avoid delays during processing.
