Canada has warned its citizens in Nigeria to be mindful of where they purchase alcohol in the country following the deaths of 48 people in Ondo State.
In Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, multiple cases of severe illness and death were recorded after the reported consumption of locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions.
Affected communities include New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu, and Oniparaga, with the highest impact recorded in Odigbo Town and Araromi-Obu.
According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), as of September 17, 2026, a total of 182 cases were recorded, with 48 deaths confirmed.
"Of the remaining affected persons, 90 were admitted and subsequently discharged, 31 were treated as outpatients, and six remain hospitalised. Disturbingly, five persons have been rendered totally blind and two partially blind. Clinical symptoms reported include headache, generalised body weakness and pain, visual disturbances, difficulty in breathing, and altered consciousness, with some cases deteriorating rapidly. The incident has since extended beyond Odigbo LGA to Irele Local Government Area. All figures remain subject to ongoing verification," NAFDAC said.
Warning citizens, Canadian authorities issued an alert, saying, "Casualties have occurred due to the consumption of unregulated and adulterated alcohol containing high levels of methanol.
"Buy alcohol from reputable establishments. Seek medical assistance if you begin to feel sick."
