Singer Fave has been slammed by netizens for saying female artistes are mostly measured by their appearance.
According to her, instead of metrics like stage presence and vocal ability, female artistes are judged by what they wear and the shape of their tummy.
She told Afropolitan Podcast: “It’s harder for female artistes to blow. Female artistes aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… it’s never really about the music; it’s more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you. And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you."
Further speaking, Fave lamented that male counterparts aren't held to the same standard.
"But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard. When it comes to performances, female artistes perform better," she said.
She added that despite the discrimination faced, “When it comes to performances, female artistes perform better.”
Reacting, netizens reminded her that so many female artistes blew up without anyone concerned about their body shape. They cited artistes like Teni, ASA, TY Bello and Shola Allison, among others.
An X user, @chukaobi, said, "When Teni blew, she was very plus-sized. The music transcended her body type. Nobody closes their eyes and sees sensuality or body shape when they sing Uyo Meyo. Mariah Carey made her absolute best and best selling music when she had her clothes on and was the girl next door. You chose to make a living off making sensual music—nobody forced you to.
It’s the lowest level use of your talent, and you decided to play in the sty. Don’t complain about how dirty the fellow pigs can get."
