The federal government has begun fresh efforts to tackle vandalism of electricity infrastructure, bringing security agencies and power sector stakeholders together to develop measures to protect critical assets and improve supply.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, convened an inaugural meeting of a ministerial committee on preventing vandalism, with participants agreeing to strengthen enforcement, deploy technology, and increase public awareness.

The committee was established in response to attacks on electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, which disrupt supply, raise repair costs and undermine investment in the sector.

At the meeting, participants discussed measures to prevent further attacks and defined the responsibilities of their respective institutions in addressing the problem.

They resolved to enforce existing laws and ensure that offenders are prosecuted. They also agreed to explore technological solutions for protecting power assets and intensify sensitisation campaigns to discourage vandalism.

The stakeholders pledged to coordinate their efforts towards ending attacks on electricity infrastructure, which remains critical to households, businesses and industries.

The committee is expected to reconvene to review progress and advance its proposed measures. However, the date of the next meeting was not stated.
