The Nigerian Navy has provided a 50,000-litre solar-powered water supply scheme to address water scarcity in Doro community, Bindawa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The project, executed under the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Quick Impact Project, was inaugurated on Tuesday in Doro village by Commodore Chigari Isah, who represented the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas.
Speaking at the inauguration, Isah said the intervention would improve access to potable water, enhance sanitation and reduce residents’ dependence on unsafe water sources.
He said the facility comprises an industrial borehole, a 50,000-litre storage tank, a solar-powered pumping system and a distribution network supplying water to three strategic locations in Doro and adjoining communities.
According to him, the project in honour of Rear Adm. Yusuf Idris, Director of Logistics at the Defence Space Administration, also includes restrooms for patients and staff of the community healthcare centre.
He said the project demonstrated the Navy’s commitment to civil-military cooperation and community development, adding that improved living conditions contributed to national security and stability.
Isah commended Idris for facilitating the project, and urged residents to protect the facilities against vandalism and ensure their proper maintenance.
Earlier, Idris said the project was initially conceived to renovate an Islamiyya school and reactivate an existing borehole.
He explained that consultations with community representatives revealed that potable water was the community’s most pressing need, prompting a change in the project’s scope.
According to him, the completed scheme will reduce the hardship associated with fetching water, support domestic activities and help prevent waterborne diseases.
Idris also announced a medical outreach for residents of Doro and neighbouring communities, noting that access to clean water and healthcare were closely connected.
He urged community leaders to establish an effective management arrangement to ensure the continued functionality of the borehole, solar equipment, storage tank and distribution network.
In his remarks, Badaru Musa, Chairman of Bindawa Local Government Area, thanked the Navy and Idris for addressing a major challenge confronting residents.
Musa said the intervention would improve access to clean water and serve as an example of community-focused leadership worthy of emulation.
He prayed for God’s blessings on the Nigerian Navy and others who contributed to the project.
Also speaking, Umar Babani, District Head of Mani and Durbin Katsina, who represented the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmuminu Kabir-Usman, commended the Navy for responding to the community’s needs.
Babani urged residents to safeguard the facilities and ensure that the benefits of the intervention were sustained for future generations.
