The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has renovated more than 4,000 classrooms and implemented over 200 whole-school improvement projects across Nigeria to improve learning conditions in public schools.
The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, disclosed this during an inspection tour of Basic and Secondary School, Nyanya Hausawa, and Model Girls Junior Secondary School, AMAC Estate, Abuja.
Garba said the interventions were being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to improve access to quality education and ensure that no child was left behind.
She explained that the whole-school approach required schools undergoing renovation to meet UBEC’s minimum standards for essential facilities.
These include classrooms, furniture, toilets, water supply, fencing, electricity and other infrastructure needed to create a conducive learning environment.
The Director of Fiscal Planning at UBEC, Nura Ibrahim, said the Nyanya Hausawa project covered early childhood care and development, primary, junior secondary and senior secondary sections.
According to him, the project included about 30 renovated classrooms and 48 toilets connected to a solar-powered water system.
The Principal of Basic and Secondary School, Nyanya Hausawa, Gideon Isa, said the renovation had improved students’ attitudes and teachers’ performance.
However, he appealed to UBEC to provide an administrative block to serve the three schools operating within the complex.
