Nigerian educationist Amos Dangut has assumed office as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), becoming the 14th person to occupy the position.

Dangut formally took over on October 1, 2026, beginning a five-year tenure that will run until September 2031. He succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

His assumption of office follows his appointment by the WAEC Council, which was ratified at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria from October 2023.

The new registrar joined WAEC in 1998 after beginning his education career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994, where he worked as an examiner.

He subsequently held several positions within the council, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division, branch controller in Yola, Deputy Registrar and Controller of the Post Examinations Department, and Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office.

WAEC described Dangut as “well-skilled and versatile” in test development, administration and office management, noting that he had used information and communications technology to improve examination processes for more than two decades.

During his tenure as Nigeria’s Head of National Office, he championed reforms including computer-based WASSCE, question-paper serialisation and a digital electronic marking system.

He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive, alongside systems for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.

“During his tenure as Head of National Office, Dangut championed innovations to strengthen examination delivery, security, integrity and efficiency,” WAEC said.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science and PhD in Animal Science, as well as a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

As Head of the National Office, he served on the governing boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, JAMB and the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, among others.

WAEC said Dangut had also represented the council at major education policy forums and currently serves as the West African sub-region’s representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
