The Kaduna State Government has paid N300m towards outstanding Earned Academic Allowance arrears owed to lecturers of Kaduna State University, the university's branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has said.
The union also disclosed that the government had settled several outstanding welfare obligations, including withheld salaries and allowances dating back to 2016.
KASU-ASUU Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Silas Amos Bakut, disclosed this at a press briefing on Friday, while commending Governor Uba Sani for implementing the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The union said the government had paid the 60 per cent withheld salary for 2017, outstanding Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme allowances for 2016 to 2020, and five months of withheld salaries covering May to September 2022.
It added that the N300m payment was an advance towards settling Earned Academic Allowance arrears for the 2016 to 2020 academic sessions.
According to the union, the university's Governing Council and management are also working with it to resolve outstanding death benefits and promotion arrears dating back to 2021.
KASU-ASUU said the interventions had eased longstanding welfare challenges and demonstrated the state government's commitment to improving conditions for academic staff.
The union also praised the government and university management for their handling of an earlier industrial dispute, saying its members were neither intimidated nor harassed during the strike.
“Remarkably, our salaries were paid while the strike was still ongoing, and engagements between the union, the government and university management remained cordial,” it said.
The lecturers further recalled that the Sani administration had allocated about 10.2 hectares of land to the KASU-ASUU Multipurpose Cooperative Society for an academic housing estate.
It said the government also approved a N400m subsidy for the housing project, with each beneficiary expected to receive N4m in support.
The union said it would continue engaging the state government and university management to resolve outstanding welfare issues and strengthen industrial harmony.
It also commended the Commissioner for Education, Emeritus Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, and members of the negotiation committee for their roles in resolving the disputes.
