Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri has emerged as the sole academic among 68 legal practitioners sworn in as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

Obiaraeri was the only university academic selected alongside 67 advocates elevated to the prestigious rank during the ceremony marking the 2026/2027 Legal Year on Monday.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee approved the elevation of the 68 recipients at its 174th plenary session held in Abuja in July.

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Kekere-Ekun, who formally admitted the recipients to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, one of the highest distinctions in the country’s legal profession.

The elevation recognises the recipients’ contributions to legal practice and scholarship, with Obiaraeri representing the academic category in this year’s list.

The 67 advocates were listed according to their seniority at the Bar.
