The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Baba Ndace, has urged broadcasters to strengthen cooperation and uphold professional standards to promote national unity and peace.
Ndace made the call on Thursday at the 82nd General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria in Calabar, Cross River State, stressing the need for media organisations to use their platforms responsibly.
“As we gather under the umbrella of BON, we must continue to strengthen collaboration, embrace innovation, uphold professional standards and use our platforms responsibly to promote unity and development,” he said.
He called on public, private and international broadcasters to deepen partnerships and adopt innovative practices that would support national development and project Nigeria’s positive image.
The VON director-general said BON’s history, dating back to 1973, reflected the broadcasting industry’s longstanding recognition of the importance of collaboration and a collective voice.
He noted that the Voice of Nigeria, which began as the external service of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation before becoming autonomous in the early 1990s, remained a proud member of the broadcasting community.
Ndace disclosed that VON currently broadcasts in nine languages: English, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Fulfulde, Kiswahili, French, Arabic and Mandarin.
He said Mandarin was added in 2026 to strengthen cultural diplomacy and deepen engagement with Chinese-speaking audiences.
The director-general congratulated BON on the assembly and pledged VON’s commitment to closer cooperation with other broadcasters.
He urged media practitioners to recognise their responsibility in shaping public discourse and promoting peaceful coexistence through professional and responsible broadcasting.
The assembly brought together broadcasters and other industry stakeholders to discuss collaboration, innovation and the future of broadcasting in Nigeria.
