President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, as he marks 20 years on the throne.
In a message celebrating the milestone, Tinubu said he joined millions of the Sultan’s subjects and friends in Nigeria and abroad in honouring his two decades as the 20th Sultan of Sokoto.
Tinubu said the Sultan had ascended the throne with humility, courage and a profound sense of duty, adding that he had since preserved and enriched the heritage of the Sokoto Caliphate while promoting peace, unity and national development.
The president praised the Sultan’s wisdom, composure during periods of tension and commitment to Nigeria, describing him as a moral authority, a bridge between faiths, a voice of moderation and a trusted adviser to leaders across the country.
Tinubu also commended the Sultan’s work as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, saying his leadership had helped foster religious harmony and tolerance between Christians and Muslims.
He cited the Sultan’s advocacy for peace in northern Nigeria and across the Sahel, support for education—particularly for girls—as well as his backing for farmers, public health and vulnerable communities.
Tinubu described his relationship with the Sultan as a valued friendship and thanked him for his counsel, support and prayers for the nation.
He prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the Sultan good health, long life and renewed wisdom, and that his reign would continue to bring peace to Sokoto, unity to Nigeria and honour to the Ummah.
