The Nigerian Navy has uncovered approximately 182,000 Litres of substance suspected to be crude oil at Bethel Creeks in Rivers state.
The discovery, according to the Nigerian Navy, was made possible by operatives of the Forward Operating Base Bonny during a follow-up operation based on actionable information concerning suspicious activities around the creeks.
Eight dug out pits were said to have been uncovered during the operation, five of which contained the suspected stolen crude oil, while hoses associated with the movement of crude oil were also discovered and subsequently handled in accordance with established procedures.
The latest discovery comes barely two weeks after the FOB Bonny uncovered eighty seven thousand litres of suspected stolen crude oil at four newly activated illegal refining sites around Aworkiri Creeks.
The successive discoveries highlight the Nigerian Navy's expanding focus on denying criminal operators the storage and transfer infrastructure required to sustain crude oil theft , rather than allowing illicit activities to become re-established after previous disruptions.
The latest crackdown on crude oil thieves is an indication of the Chief of the Naval Staff mandate to crack down on illegal refining activities, and protecting critical assets in Nigeria's territorial waters.
