The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) have urged media practitioners to strengthen their knowledge of HIV prevention to help reduce misinformation and improve public awareness.
The call was made during a two-day national training for media personnel drawn from eight states, aimed at improving accurate and evidence-based reporting of HIV prevention and reducing the burden of the disease in Nigeria.
Journalists, editors, broadcasters, digital media practitioners and national call centre personnel were trained on emerging HIV prevention technologies, including lenacapavir, as well as pre-exposure prophylaxis.
The organisers said the training was designed to improve public understanding and acceptance of available and emerging HIV prevention options.
The Director-General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori, represented by the agency’s Head of Public Relations, said the programme was aimed at strengthening HIV awareness campaigns and prevention efforts.
The Head of HIV Prevention at IHVN, Comfort Ochigbo, said the initiative was also intended to foster stronger collaboration among health institutions, development partners and the media in advancing public health.
The organisers expressed optimism that the training would promote informed public discourse and encourage greater uptake of HIV prevention services.
