Google calls for tax reduction

The internet giant, Google Inc has urged the Nigerian government to reduce taxes and fees used in laying fiber optic cables in order to boost development and growth in the technology sector of the country.

Google’s manager in the West African region, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor who made the call on Tuesday pointed out that boosting the technology sector will help the economy diversification projects of the Nigerian government most especially now that the country is going through recession as a result of the fall in price of crude oil prices in the international market.

e private sector can play a very strong role,” Ehimuan-Chiazor said, adding that internet service providers regularly complained that multiple taxes at the federal and state level raised the cost of expanding the required infrastructure.

“Where the government can help is just removing some of those obstacles – for example, bringing down right of way fees and removing this challenge around multiple taxation,” she said.
