Domestic supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, reached 4.5 million litres per day in September 2026, according to data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The figure compares with 3.7 million litres per day recorded in September 2025, although the year-on-year growth rate reported in the source requires clarification.

Despite the reported increase in supply, the price of cooking gas rose to ₦1,400 per kilogram in October from ₦1,300 in September, representing a 7.7 per cent increase.

Former National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Oladapo Olatunbosun, attributed the increase in supply to improved local production but called for sustained investment and government support to strengthen the sector.

“Local production has increased, which is the reason for the result. However, there is much to be done by both the government and stakeholders to drive the development required to harness the potential of LPG,” he said.

The figures highlight the need to sustain domestic production and address the factors affecting cooking gas prices, even as local supply improves.
