Medical services will resumed at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi-Araba, reports have said, as doctors and other workers yesterday suspended their strike action.

The health workers under the auspices of Joint House unions and the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, LUTH branch, had embarked on an indefinite strike since June 2 to press home their demands.

President of the Association, Dr Omojowolo Olubunmi and spokesperson of the Joint House unions, Kehinde Adegoke said that with the new development, all workers were expected to return to work today.

According to Olubunmi, the decision to suspend the strike was taken after ARD’s emergency meeting where the members unanimously agreed to suspend the strike based on positive response from the hospital management on most of their demands including the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Federal Ministry of Health, LUTH Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Elders of the profession and other well-meaning Nigerians.

Reviewing progress made by ARD on its demands, he said the association was able to achieve more than 50 percent reduction in hospital fees for minor surgical procedures

“The hospital has also issued a letter on tenure of residency training to reflect August 2013 circular, and a commitment to implement immediately the expected circular from the Federal Government on the subject matter.

“Also, a list of new resident doctors in all outstanding departments and employment of house officers have been released. The management will also kick start a new close User Group (CUG) means of communication within the hospital.

“We were able to get the management commitment to ensure regular availability of materials, stationery, consumables and upgrade of infrastructure, and a communiqué that was jointly signed between the hospital management, our association and other unions in the hospital under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity that holistically addressed the issues.
