Chicago Rapper Lil Marc Killed Days After Releasing Music Video
There are a lot of eyes on the Chicago rap scene right now, specifically around those leading the drill music movement.
This is more than a trendy sound in rap. It’s a way of life for those spitting rhymes and nearly every teenager blasting their tracks on the street.
For outsiders the violent lyrical themes and imagery may seem like a gimmick, but unfortunately that is often not the case.
Up and coming lyricist Lil Marc was shot and killed in the Washington Park neighborhood of Chicago last Friday. According to DNAinfo, the 20-year old rising star and self-confessed local 051 Young Money gang member was shot at approximately 1:30 p.m. while standing near a bus stop. Police have not made any arrests in connection with the murder.
The death of Lil Marc comes just days after he released a music video for his single “No Competition,” which served as a diss track for rival gang OTF. The verses and imagery depict Marc mocking the crew while he and his closest friends point illegal guns at everything around them, including the camera and their own heads. This is not the first and likely will not be the last time the lines between fantasy and reality cross for the Chicago rap scene. Last month, seventeen-year-old RondoNumbaNine was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a cab driver. You may recall us discussing his career back in January.
There is a lot of great material coming out of Chicago right now, but none of that matters when young people are dying senseless deaths in the street. Stay safe, Chicago. Nothing is worth all this bloodshed.
