House Moves to Amend Treaties Act Of 1993

The House of Representatives has commenced the review and amendment of the Treaties Act of 1993.

Declaring open, the one day public hearing in Abuja, Tuesday, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila explained that when the amendment bill becomes law, it will make the country's laws on treaties and protocols fully compliant with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and ensure that it aligns with global best practices.

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila who was represented by Hon. Sani Daura further reiterated that repealing the Treaties Act of 1993 represents a bold and long overdue step in the march towards a more perfect democracy.

Chairman of the House Committee on Treaties, Protocol and Agreement, Honorable Ossai Ossai expressed worry that the signing of some Treaties and Agreement may have been selectively internalized through a process of Executive fiat which is a clear infringement of the country's Constitution.

He said the amendment will make treaties and protocols compliant with the 1999 constitution.

Stakeholders at the hearing sued for synergy among the three arms of government in signing agreements in line with international best practice.
