Women’s Day: N’Assembly Moves to Amend Constitution to Address Gender Discrimination

The Nigerian Senate has expressed readiness to amend the Constitution to ensure gender parity and enact laws to improve the fortunes of women and girls in Nigeria.

This comes as the Senate also resolved to expunge provisions of the law in the Police Act, Federal Character Law, Electoral Act, Labour Act, and Political Parties’ constitutions that infringe on the rights of women.

This is part of resolutions on Wednesday at plenary when the Upper Chamber considered a motion on the 2021 International Women’s Day Celebration with the theme: “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-l9 world #Choose To Challenge”.

Galaxy's Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that the motion is sponsored by Rivers West Senator, Betty Apiafi and co-sponsored by seven other female senators.

Contributing, other female lawmakers called for the mainstreaming of women affairs in national planning.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said the provision of equal opportunities for women would, in the long run, be in the interest of Nigeria as a nation.
