Tinubu Cautions Police Officers against Misuse of Firearms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reminded officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force that the power vested in them is not for intimidation but for protection, for service and not to abuse the masses .He emphasized the need for officers to maintain the highest standards of accountability, uphold the rule of law, protect citizens’ rights, and reject all forms of misconduct and corruption to earn the public’s trust.
Galaxy Television reports that the President while speaking through the Senate President, Senator Godswilll Akpabio, at the Second Edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendation Ceremony in Abuja, Commended the leadership of Force for sustaining the awards initiative, which celebrates courage, integrity, and dedication. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the Force through investments in modern equipment, technology, training, and welfare..
The Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun stressed that the era of routine recognition and entitlement within the Police is over, replaced by a merit-based system that honors officers who exhibit exceptional bravery, discipline, and leadership. Addressing the nation’s growing security threats from terrorism to cybercrime and organized criminal networks, the IGP affirmed that the Force is ready and evolving. He called for deeper investments in digital intelligence, global best practices, and constant retraining to meet modern policing demands.
Some of the dignitaries at the ceremony extended their congratulations to the NPF and the award recipients, just as they described the award as a meaningful gesture of encouragement for police officers. The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards in categories such as Crime Buster of the Year, Community Policing Advocate, Detective of the Year, Patrol Team of the Year, and Public Relations Officer of the Year among others.
