Experts Harp On Preservation of Bees

Experts have called for the preservation of bees as part of efforts towards achieving food security in Nigeria.

They spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during an event organized by the Apicultural Association of Ogun State to commemorate the 2021 World Bee Day.

Prof. Olusegun Lawal of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State emphasized that bees pollinate the majority of crop produce being consumed by human beings, hence the need for their preservation.

Prof. Lawal, in his lecture, maintained that bees also help in ensuring that there is a balanced ecosystem.

He advocated for a national policy on the protection of bees warning that Nigerians may face famine if there is no enough and adequate pollination system.

The President of the association, Prof. Adebola Osipitan, promised that members will always strive towards producing organic honey.

He however sought the collaboration of government and relevant stakeholders in the quest to attain food security in the country.
