Anambra Youths Set Police Station Ablaze over Extrajudicial Killing

The youths of Anambra in Igboukwu axis of Anambra state southeast Nigeria have burnt down the police station in their community following the killing of an innocent Okada rider by a police officer attached to the station.

However, the commissioner of Police, in the state CP John Abang has ordered for the detention of policemen involved in the alleged shooting incident in Igboukwu.

According to a statement issued by the Command spokesperson, SP Haruna Mohammed on 15/12/2020 at about 10:30 pm, there was an altercation between police operatives and motorcycle riders over some impounded motorcycles as a result of disobedience to the recent restriction on movement of motorcycles beyond 9 pm in the State.

He also directed a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He stated the situation degenerated into chaos which led to an accidental discharge that hit one motorcycle rider and burning of Igboukwu police station by irate youth.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP John B. Abang, who was deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident appealed for calm and assured the public that justice would be done in the case, adding that the outcome of Police investigation shall be made public in due course.
