FG Launches New Basic Education Curriculum

The Federal Government says it is working hard to reposition the education sector through the provision of enabling policy framework that will drive the development of a globally competitive work force in Nigeria.

The Minister of State for Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike said this on Monday at the launching of the revised Basic Education Curriculum being organized by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council(NERDC) in Abuja.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary at the ministry, MACJohn Nwaobiala, the minister noted that as a result of the revision, old subjects have been jettisoned while content standards renewed, to meet national needs as well as global best practices.

According to him, the aims of the revised curriculum include: Value re-orientation, Educational growth and development, Wealth creation and employment generation in the country.

Earlier in his address, the Executive Secretary NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma said there are adequate measures for the training of teachers, as well as the sensitization of all relevant stakeholders on the curriculum and how to ensure its effective implementation from September 2014.

He further said that if teachers adequately implement the curriculum, students would be well prepared for critical thinking and entrepreneurship.

The Federal Government however, expressed optimism that core national, social and economic objectives of the educational system in the country, will be accomplished through the new basic curriculum.
