South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns Signs EJike

Nigeria international, Ejike Uzoenyi, has signed for South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns, according to the club's official website.

The winger signed a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee that will keep him at Sundowns till 2018.

But Uzoenyi will not join up with his new teammates until June this year.

"Mamelodi Sundowns have completed the acquisition of Christantus Ejike Uzoenyi from Enugu Rangers of Nigeria.

"After being on the radar of many South African teams, and some European, the 24 year old Nigerian has signed a four year deal with The Brazilians and will join his new teammates in June," Sundowns announced on their official website late on Thursday.

It was believed Uzoenyi was close to joining SuperSport United but that did not that happen and Sundowns in their announcement said "negotiations for the player’s acquisition have been ongoing since after the Chan tournament and the player is excited to have finally concluded the deal."

Uzoenyi explained that he opted to join The Brazilians since their ambitions tally with his "objectives as a player."

The former Gateway FC man also credited the head coach of the Pretoria-based club, Pitso Mosimane for convincing him to join the five-time Premier Soccer League (PSL) winners.

“Joining a club like Sundowns is a great deal for me because their ambitions to conquer Africa are in line with my career objectives as a player.

“The other thing that made me join the club is that coach Pitso had a chat with me before I joined and we had a discussion about his plans for me and I feel that I’m ready for the challenge,” Uzoenyi told sundownsfc.com.

Uzoenyi will, however, remain with Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Enugu Rangers, until June.

The petite winger's standout performance at the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) sparked off interests from South African clubs.
