Senate Sets Committee To Investigate Police Invasion Of The National Assembly

The Senate has set up a seven man committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi to investigate last Thursday’s invasion of the National assembly complex by Police officers.

The decision came after debate on a motion by senate leader Victor Ndoma Egba who reminded distinguished senators of the mayhem that was unleashed on lawmakers last Thursday.

The debate was like opening of a new wound as distinguished senators took time to air their views.

What mattered to them most was that uptill now no one has owned up the directive which caused the crisis even after several calls were put across to the police hierarchy.

Senator grabbed Egba’s motion with wide debate condemning police action in its entirety, To some of them, the action was an affront to the legislature which they believe is the only symbol of democracy. They said that the sanctity of the legislature was defiled.

Such action was last seen during the fourth senate when the residence of then senate president Chuba Okadigbo was barricaded by security men.

Lawmakers described the incident as a coup attempt on the legislature, calling for the prosecution of the perpetrators.

Truly, the invasion was a collective assault of Federal lawmakers and many believe that the Police have no power to carry out such action, a reason for the unison of senators in this fight.

Some of the senators however expressed concern over the outcome of the committee. But the senate president think otherwise as he only want stability in the polity.

Other members of the committee are Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, Victor Lar, Adegbenga Kaka, Paulinus Nwagu, Mohammed Bindowo and Ehigi Uzamare.
