Electricity workers protest in Jebba

The National Union of Electricity Employees is at logger heads with the management of Mainstream Energy at the Jebba Hydro Power Plant in Kwara state over alleged sacking and victimization of workers.

The union members held a protest in front of the power plant to protest to demand the unionisation of their workers and recall of sacked workers.

The workers led by their union leaders are protesting refusal of the management to allow unionism and illegal sacking of workers.

Demonstrating  with placards with various inscriptions condemning the attitude of management towards their workers, the union leaders say they have decided to occupy the power plant until their demands are met.

They also alleged that there is no condition of service at the plant thereby subjecting workers to victimisation and eventual sack.

They wondered how the management could refuse unionism when the constitution allows it.

The country heritage they added had been sold to few individuals who do not have the technical know how to manage the structure and called on the federal government to intervene.

Efforts made by the zonal union to broker peace according to the workers were not acknowledged by the management who were always not on ground.

Some of the workers were brutalized during the protest by some security guards of the plant.

Efforts to speak with the management of Mainstream Energy Solution, owners of the Jebba Hydro Power plant in Niger state proved abortive.
