NMA Commends FG For Quick Intervention In Handling Ebola

Following the report of the World of Health Organization, which certified Nigeria as an Ebola Virus Disease Free Country, ‎ the Nigeria Medical Association and other Stakeholders have commended the Federal Government for the quick intervention which lead to early containment of the Disease. A cross section of experts, who spoke in Abeokuta, during the Physician Week of Ogun State Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association stated that the development was an indication that the health sector in Nigeria could perform better. The Physician Week ‎of the Nigeria Medical Association was designed to raise issues on National interest to the level of discussion with a view of proffering solution. This year event was titled “ War against Ebola”. ‎All the speakers at the symposium, which was attended by a survivor of the dreadful Disease from Lagos state, hailed the recent report of the World Health Organisation which gave Nigeria a clean bill of health in this regard. In his remark, the President, Ogun State Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Adenike Odewabi‎, commended all the stakeholders within and beyond the Health sector in Nigeria for the feat achieved stating that, it was an indication that, giving the best resources, the Health sector in Nigeria could perform to the uptimal level. She added that the recent World Health Organisation report on the status of Nigeria on the Ebola Virus Disease chat on the early containment of the disease, was a victory for the entire Nigerians, especially, those who sacrifice their lives. Also, some of the Experts, who spoke during the opening session of the programme said, the feat achieved in the Health Sector was a revelation of the fact that, if government could deploy enough resources, especially funds to the health Sector in Nigeria, the country would be better for it. They charged government and other stakeholders not to think that the siege was over but constant efforts should be made in order to sustain the feat that had been achieved in the fight against Ebola Virus Disease. The Experts added that all hands must be on the deck for the country to sustain the clean sheet on Ebola and that Government must ensure ‎proper funding of the health sector at all levels in Nigeria. In his remark, the Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka stated that there was need for an intensive health Education‎ across the country to sustain the report from the World Health Organisation.
